Lithuania receives LNG cargo from Norway’s Statoil

Lithuania’s Klaipeda LNG terminal received a cargo of liquefied natural gas from Statoil’s Hammerfest plant in Norway on Wednesday. This is the fifth LNG cargo Lithuania received from Norway’s Statoil since the beginning of this year. The cargo was delivered onboard the 140,000 cbm Arctic Discoverer.

The next liquefied natural gas cargo to Lithuania will be brought onboard the 140,000 cbm Arctic Voyager. The LNG tanker is expected to arrive in the port of Klaipeda in the period from April 4-7, Indre Miliniene, spokeswoman at Klaipedos Nafta, the operator of Lithuania’s first LNG terminal told LNG World News on Thursday.

Lithuania started importing LNG in December 2014 in order to reduce its dependence on Russian gas supplies. Chilled gas is imported via Höegh LNG’s FSRU Independence located in the port of Klaipeda.

The Baltic country revised the LNG import deal it has with Statoil in January cutting the price by 15-20 percent. The contract has been extended from five to 10 years while the volume Lithuania will import from Norway increased from 2.7 billion cubic meters to 3.7 bcm.

All previous deliveries to Lithuania’s LNG terminal were strictly for Litgas, a part of state-controlled energy group Lietuvos Energija. However, as of February this year, the imported volumes are split between Litgas, Lietuvos Duju Tiekimas, and Lithuanian fertilizer producer Achema.
